Ski & Alpine

Yes you can ski in Hawaii! Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for 'white mountain'), is on the Big Island. It is the only place in Hawaii where you can strap on skis and hit the slopes, it helps if you are an experienced skier and in good physical condition.

As there are no lodges, lifts, or equipment hire on Mauna Kea, skiiers will need a four-wheel drive to get to the 14,000 foot summit. Avid skiiers who tackle this massive extinct volcano usually travel in groups and take turns at driving to the summit and picking up the skiiers below.

This wilderness skiing experience is open to the extremities of nature. Often, when there is snow, howling winds prevent skiing. Snow falls on the mountain between December and May with the best skiing usually in February and March.

Some of the world's highest skiing occurs on this mountain, including its undersea base White Mountain stands at more than 19,000 feet. Skiing from such heights careering towards the ocean is truly an adventure of a lifetime.
