North of Kane’ohe, the former taro town of Waihole is rural and rustic with beautiful surrounds, many walking trails through verdant countryside and a number of family-run fruit farms, coconut groves and blooming orchid gardens. It is also know for its excellent eating fish, ahole, which is much sought after by pole and thrownet fishermen and divers.

Renowned for a historical triumph in the acquisition of prime beachfront land under the administration of local authorities the small community continues to thrive independent of, but not exclusive to, tourism.

Things to do

  • Hike it over Kahana Stream along Waihole Ditch Trail or hit the dirt on Waihole Falls Trail.
  • Look out for the immense traditional canoe handcrafted by residents with the help of New Zealanders.
  • Grab a plate lunch at the café at Heeia Kea Boat Harbour with views over Kane’ohe Bay.
  • Catch your own with a spot of fishing with local anglers.
