Caught between land and sea is the lovely fishing village of Punalu’u, literally meaning ‘to dive for coral’, which women traditionally did to make hair bleach and which corporations up until recently harvested for construction purposes.

Whilst fishing is the main orientation of many, the lush, fertile region watered by misty afternoon showers, lends itself to profitable agriculture as well as a verdant natural habitat for many species of flora and fauna.

An easy-going lifestyle is perfectly complemented by the relaxing, mainly reef-protected beach, with the Beach Park and Waiono Stream at its southern side affording family fun in the sun.

Things to do

Dine at the one and only restaurant in town, renowned for its fine seafood selection

  • Shop at quaint wooden stores originally built by migrant workers and now boasting long local histories
  • Visit Punalu’u Art Gallery and The Wax Revolution for arts and crafts of good quality
  • Learn of the legend of Sacred Falls and see St Joaquin’s Church for a lesson in harmony
  • Cool off with the kids in the warm shallows of Waiono Stream and channel when waters are calm
