Hugging the coastline and running parallel to the major highway is a glorious stretch that begins at Kahalu’u Bay and ends at Keahou Bay, passing the tiny cove of He’eia Bay as it goes.

Kahalu’u Bay is the perfect playground for beginners and enthusiasts in terms of snorkeling as an ancient breakwater built on the reef protects it even further. An abundance of colorful fish, green sea turtles and a multitude of other oceanic life forms make it difficult to abandon the wonders of the water for the curious soft black lava and white coral sands of the beach.

Whilst the actual townships of both bays are quite small they cater well for all interests and there’s plenty to do both day and night. The tourist throngs flock to this idyllic haven for its marine life, historic sites and striking natural features.

Things to do

  • Get hitched at the site of many a wedding at pretty little St Peter’s Church which literally sits on water.
  • Visit religious heiaus or temples and the house of kings from the grounds of Ohana Keahou Beach Resort.
  • Walk the lava shelf for tide pools full of astonishing sea creatures if snorkeling’s not your thing.
  • Make like Charlie at the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory where only local cocoa beans are used.
  • Take in a flick at Keahou Cinema before a serious sunset vista from a seductive seaside venue.
