Overview
Bookmark

Originally notorious for its bandits, Makaha is today a pleasant coastal respite with classic surfing opportunities, lovely beaches, recreational activities, local residential condos and a finely restored heiau or temple.

Further afield is Ka’ena Point with its beach park, state park, hiking trails – and the huge Kaneana Cave evocative of ancient rituals practised by Hawaiian kahuna, or priests.

Things to do

  • Snorkel the underwater archways of Makeha Caverns in the calm of summer.
  • Visit Kaneaki Heiau temple with its 2 prayer towers, a taboo house, altars and idols.
  • Stop for a spot of golf at the Makeha Valley Country Club – just for the views!.
  • Exhilarate yourself by hiking the Kuaokala Trail above the Ka’ena Point Tracking Station.
  • Surf the waters of Makaha Beach, Yokohama Bay and Keaau Beach Park.
