Site of one of the largest native populations on O’ahu is the Hawaiian Homesteads settlement based in Nanakuli, the largest town on the Wai’anae Coast. Next in size is Wai’anae, protected by the breakwater at Kane’ilio Point. Both towns offer basic facilities such as supermarkets and some fast-food outlets but the attraction is really in getting away from it all to surf and camp in seclusion.
Nearby Kahe Point and Ma’ili also have beach parks with limited facilities and are ideal for swimming in summer and surfing in winter.
