Diamond Head

Just 20 minutes from Waikiki the coast curves around the tip of Ko’olau Range toward the immense volcanic backdrop of Diamond Head tuff cone and crater. It was formed by a significant explosion way after O’hau’s volcanic activity was believed to have ceased, but today it makes for one of the Pacific’s foremost landmarks.

Naturally, activities lend themselves to water sports, but hiking and history still play a part in and around the region.

And for the seduction of man-made attractions, there is always the lure of the luxurious neighborhood of Kahala, the preferred retreat of many celebrities and dignitaries.

Things to do

  • Trek the trail to the crater rim of Diamond Head for the best panoramic views around.
  • Work your way through the tunnels and bunkers of the old WWII Fort Ruger en route.
  • Windsurf or catch a wave or two when the surf’s up at Diamond Head Beach.
  • Do a bit of star spotting while shopping, wining and dining at the regal Kahala neighbourhood.
