Definitely only for die hard trailblazers and dreamy - but supremely athletic – stargazers, Mauna Loa is accessible best by 4WD - and some serious foot work thereafter will take you further afield into the subarctic wilderness of Hawaii as it’s seldom depicted in stereotype!
At an altitude of 13677ft, Mauna Loa is reached from a relatively primitive base camp at Red Hill with a full day’s hike taking you to the summit through hauntingly beautiful and desolate lava scapes of many colors, textures and compositions.
Naturally, when the world isn’t awash in a flurry of whiteness the views to Mauna Kea and Haleakala in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are simply stunning!
