Reminiscent of a slow, sleepy ‘wild west’ town of old, Kaunakakai is Molaka’i’s one and only township with facilities and amenities sufficient to keep you going – for a little while at least.
The wharf is still a hub of activity and at dark night-fishers carry lanterns out to sea to procure their catch, making for an eerie sight. Nearby, Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove fringes the sacred bathing pools, built in the 1860’s for Hawaiian royalty.
