Kaunakakai

Reminiscent of a slow, sleepy ‘wild west’ town of old, Kaunakakai is Molaka’i’s one and only township with facilities and amenities sufficient to keep you going – for a little while at least.

The wharf is still a hub of activity and at dark night-fishers carry lanterns out to sea to procure their catch, making for an eerie sight. Nearby, Kapuaiwa Coconut Grove fringes the sacred bathing pools, built in the 1860’s for Hawaiian royalty.

Things to do

  • Take advantage of Kaunakakai Gym’s indoor swimming pool when the sea is murky.
  • Hit Hotel Moloka’i for happy hour, island guitar and its popular ‘Aloha’ Fridays.
  • Picnic, party or camp at One Ali’i Beach Park and see memorials to early Japanese migrants.
  • Rent fishing, surfing, kayaking or diving gear from one of the many hire spots.
  • Browse through Kamakana Fine Arts Gallery for inspiring pieces by the island’s 80 artists.
