Halawa Valley

Breathe in the deep eucalypt-scented air as you traverse the ups and downs of the road that leads to the once prosperous fruit field and taro town of Halawa Valley.

Today little remains after the village was effectively wiped out by two successive tsunamis but it is still a good place for the whole family in terms of hiking, kayaking, swimming and whale watching - as long as common sense and caution are exercised at times when the waters are wild.

Things to do

  • Picnic & surf at Halawa Beach Park which has twin coves separated by rocks for exploring.
  • Alternatively, take the 2-mile trek to the cascading twin drops of Moa’ula Falls.
  • Keep the duality going with a visit to one of 2 temples rumoured to be sites of human sacrifice.
  • Visit the nearby organic farm of Pu’u O Hoku Ranch with its eerie sightings of nocturnal spirits.
