Caught between the scenic eastern drive and the arid west is Central Moloka’i, which boasts the Ho’olehua Plains which span from Mo’omomi Beach to the town of Kualapu’u.

The Plains give rise to Kamakou Preserve, a dense and verdant rainforest region with the island’s highest mountain, and the leprosy colony of Kalaupapa Peninsula, with its poignant tale of tragedy and compassion, on the north side

Things to do

  • Take a 4WD tour to the peak of Mt. Kamakou for its native plants, rare birds and striking views.
  • Walk the boardwalk to the fragile and beautiful dwarf forest bog en route to the Pepe’opae Trail.
  • Visit the former pineapple plantation village of Kualapu’u with the world’s largest reservoir.
  • Hit the wildly beautiful isolated terrain of the undisturbed sand-dunes of Mo’omomi Beach.
  • Familiarize yourself with the works of Father Damien who gave dignity to lepers in rugged Kalaupapa.
