Overview

Traditionally Wailuku had a rich religious and political history that has given rise to many buildings and sites being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remains the center of government administration in Maui today.

Whilst it is definitely not geared toward tourism it is interesting for its unique antique shops, beautiful orchid gardens and faithfully restored relics of the past.

Nightlife is limited due to a certain rough element but a number of cheap, quality eateries invite lunchtime indulgence.

Things to do

  • Visit Bailey House Museum for insight into missionary days and a prized collection of artefacts.
  • Wind your way along ‘Iao Stream at the Tropical Gardens of Hawaii, one of the best on the island.
  • Take the kids for a fun interactive experience followed by a picnic at Kepaniwai County Park.
  • Drive up to ‘Iao Valley State Park for vistas of legendary ‘Iao Needle, ‘Iao Stream and steep cliffs.
  • Be awed at Haleki’I-Pihana Heiau State Monument where temples offered the last human sacrifice.
