Attesting to a past based on an avid bovine bent, Makawao is cattle country at its best. Lush green pastures still border the main township which comprises of wooden facades reminiscent of the wild west and paniola pastiche, Hawaiian style, still rides high in true cowboy style.
Dig a little deeper and a different culture emerges from the woodwork – New Age lifestylers have also jumped on the bandwagon to create a curious but delightful blend of alternatives, so that now, ‘ye olde gunshop’ yields happily to yoga centers specializing in crystal therapies!
