From the sovereignty of a royal court to the heyday of the whaling era to the imminence of the future Lahaina remains the focal point of Maui for numerous reasons. She was always a good time gal, but the social traditions of old Hawaii have undergone transformation and progressively, the saloons, dancehalls and brothels of the 19th Century have given way to the art galleries, restaurants, bars and nightclubs of a vibrant contemporary city.
What remains constant is its idyllic coastal setting amid an imposing mountain backdrop - and the range of activities to which it lends itself. The bustling small-boat harbor and the Front Street neighborhood is where it all begins.
