Overview

The distinctive feature of the tiny town of Keokea lies in its Chinese origins of the early 20th century. This is when, in the true spirit of the Hakka Chinese people, the inhospitable region was settled and farmed against all odds.

It now serves a small but flourishing community and is the last stop before Hana on the south side of the island.

Things to do

  • Visit the park dedicated to Sun Yat-sen, a founder of Chinese nationalism who lived here awhile.
  • Stop in at St. John’s Episcopal Church adorned with Chinese characters for a multicultural perspective.
  • Partake of home-grown fare and real coffee at Grandma’s Coffee House which roasts its own beans.
  • Rest awhile in rustic cottages amid bamboo groves and fruit orchards before continuing your journey.
