Occasionally impassable, the rugged, mainly dirt road of Pi’ilani Highway to Kaupo is an adventure trail in itself where intrepid travelers can work their way to ancient temple ruins and pristine beaches via towering cliffs and amazing views through the deep valley of Kaupo Gap.

Civilization is characterized by the emergence of mango trees, banyans and bougainvillea that give way to guava groves and pandanus at the approach to true cowboy country in the ranch town of Kaupo.

Things to do

  • Visit the historical temple of Loaloa Heiau and the pretty Hui Aloha Church at Mokulau Beach.
  • Stop off to snack and replenish supplies at Kaupo General Store – when it is open of course!.
  • Swim with the locals – and maybe a dolphin or two – at sheltered Nu’uu Bay when it is calm.
  • See a natural lava sea arch, blowholes, islands, outcrops and lava flows before ‘Ulupalakua Ranch.
