Caught between the mountains that flank Central Maui is Kahului, the commercial hub and business district of the region. From its early beginnings as the headquarters of Hawaii’s first railroad it has developed into the center for many forms of transport including the airport to the east and many highways running in all directions from the city.
Beyond the city the suburban sprawl spreads extensively before giving way to vast fields of sugarcane and other crops.
