The ‘Private Island’ of Lanai is home to Keomuku via the rugged road from Lana’i City, which is generally immersed in atmospheric cloud and fog drifts over green pastures that once were fertile, but short-lived, sugarcane fields. Natural lookouts offer sightings of lovely coastline, with shipwrecks, rocky outcrops and islands and islets visible in the distance.

The village itself doesn’t lend itself to any tourist activity as such but offers a peek at its hidden secret surrounds.

Things to do

  • Hit the dirt to Shipwreck Beach as you beach comb for ‘treasures’ which drift ashore from days of old.
  • Visit the ancient stone temple site of Maunalei, dismantled by the sugar industry to build a cattle fence.
  • Stop off at Ka Lanakila o Ka Malamalama Church, built in 1903 and recently restored to its former glory.
  • Make like a sheep and follow the wild curly-horned herd to the petroglyphs near lighthouse foundations.
