The government, commercial and retail district of Kaua’I, Lihue is undergoing a boom-time renaissance as the focal point of where it all begins on the island.

Despite a huge influx of tourism it retains a familiar small country town feel, is easy to get around and offers a full range of services to ensure locals and travelers alike get down to business – and pleasure.

On the leisurely side, from water sports to more grounded pursuits, available activities and attractions are diverse - as are eating, accommodation and entertainment alternatives in this biggish city with a quaint rural outlook.

Things to do

  • Uncover history and heritage with artefacts and displays for an evocative overview at Kaua’i Museum.
  • Visit Lihu’e Lutheran Church, quirkily reminiscent of the ship that brought German migrants here.
  • Inspire yourself at the International Surfing Hall of Fame with hot exhibits in cool surrounds.
  • Take to the waters of Kalapaki Beach or Nawiliwili Bay, then cruise the lively promenade at sundown.
  • Play tennis or golf, take a waterfall trek, explore gardens and grounds – turf action abounds as well!.
