Hanalei (meaning 'Crescent Bay') lends its name to a city, bay, beach, river, valley and lookout. All are equally spectacular; the valley of Hanalei is surrounded by majestic mountains. A mile wide and 6 miles long, it's the home of the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge.

The majority of all of Hawaii's taro is grown in Hanalei. Taro is used to make poi and other food products - a favourite ingredient in Hawaiian's diets. The irrigated fields are constantly are grown in patches displaying a manner of diffferent shades of green resembling a patchwork quilt.

Hanalei has fantastic panoramic views and one of Hawaii's most scenic beaches. Swimming is usually safe here during the summer, but avoid the water during the rugged winter months. Not far away is the famous, Lumahai Beach, where Mitzi Gaynor sang "I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair" in the Hollywood film classic, South Pacific.

Things to do

  • Surf the famous waves of Hanalei beach.
  • Kayak the Hanalei river.
  • Visit the Wai'Oli Hui'ia Church and Mission House.
  • Gaze at the patchwork of green fields from the Hanalei Lookout.
  • Get amongst the constant action at Hanalei Beach Park.
