The northern aspect of from Kailua-Kona offers striking contrast to the southern. Highway 19 runs flat and straight through black lava terrain dramatically ornamented by red bougainvillea and very little else in terms of vegetation.
The inland edifices of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, often snow-capped in winter - and majestic always - are visible from the coastal road.
Along the way are harbour towns such as Honokohau, the thermal-energy conversion center of Keahole Point, the abandoned fishing village of Ka’upulehu and the tropical oasis of Kiholo Bay.
