The northern aspect of from Kailua-Kona offers striking contrast to the southern. Highway 19 runs flat and straight through black lava terrain dramatically ornamented by red bougainvillea and very little else in terms of vegetation.

The inland edifices of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, often snow-capped in winter - and majestic always - are visible from the coastal road.

Along the way are harbour towns such as Honokohau, the thermal-energy conversion center of Keahole Point, the abandoned fishing village of Ka’upulehu and the tropical oasis of Kiholo Bay.

Things to do

  • Meet the ‘catch of the day’ at the daily weighing in at Honokohau Harbor.
  • Explore tide pools over lava banks at Wawaloli Beach at Keyhole Point.
  • 4WD your way over rough terrain to idyllic secluded coves and beaches along the way.
  • Luxuriate in up-market comfort at one of the resorts at Ka’upulehu.
  • Access the trail that leads from the lookout to spectacular Kiholo Bay.
