Navigate easily around this town where highways parallel the beachline and investigate the diversity of cultures that exist harmoniously amid the tourist throngs.

  • Originally a sugar town, the demise of the industry in the mid 1990’s led to a change of direction toward tourism. Downtown reflects this with a vast array of small shops bent on procuring the tourist dollar. However, quality bargains are still to be found and even with its commercial outlook Kailua still offers affordable lodging and is a great base for exploring the Kona Coast.

Things to do

  • Sample regional specialties of beer and coffee at their respective annual festivals.
  • Visit Moku’aikaua Church, Hawaii’s first Christian church established in 1836.
  • Rub hands with royalty at King Kamehameha’s ‘summer’ residence and Hulihe’e Palace.
  • Feast on a succulent luau and enjoy sunset hula at one of the larger hotels.
