Twenty-eight miles from Hilo and sitting virtually on the brink of aptly-named Kilauea Caldron at an altitude of 3700ft, the village of Volcano is prone to the vicissitudes of the weather so it’s necessary to be prepared for elemental extremes.

As the gateway to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park the village is a picturesque place to stay and play, and a chance to indulge in some creature comforts before tackling the trials of the trails within!

Things to do

  • Orientate yourself with the beauty - and the dangers - of the region at Kilauea Visitor Center theater.
  • Cycle or drive the 11m of Crater Rim Drive for spectacular views of current and past volcanic activity.
  • Pick up some fine quality and unique artworks from Volcano Art Center.
  • See sulphuric gasses, steam vents, molten lakes, lava tubes and the eerie ghosts of rainforests past.
  • Pick up a copy of the Volcano Gazette for a run-down on what’s happening each month.
