Located halfway between Honoka’a and Hilo, Laupahoehoe is reached via an extremely scenic - but steep - drive fringed by dense vegetation and with amazing cliffs looming in the distance.
The original schoolhouse was hit by a huge tsunami in 1946 and the whole plantation town was forced to move uphill from Laupahoehoe Point, a peninsula formed from the laval flow of a late-stage Mauna Kea eruption.
The rugged coast and rough waters preclude swimming, however there is a county beach park with good amenities for camping.
