The advantages of heavy rainfalls in the Hilo region relate to verdant rainforest terrains, enclaves of traditional ethnic societies untainted by the tourist influx, and quiet respite for weary travellers wishing to get away from it all.
Having said that however, Hilo has recently become the subject of development that extends to ritzy restaurants, cafes, studios and galleries interspersed between and within faithfully restored historic buildings, and charming back streets that invite exploration.
