Overview

The advantages of heavy rainfalls in the Hilo region relate to verdant rainforest terrains, enclaves of traditional ethnic societies untainted by the tourist influx, and quiet respite for weary travellers wishing to get away from it all.

Having said that however, Hilo has recently become the subject of development that extends to ritzy restaurants, cafes, studios and galleries interspersed between and within faithfully restored historic buildings, and charming back streets that invite exploration.

Things to do

  • Walk your way into Hilo’s history on a tour that takes in the architecture of generations.
  • Visit planetary plains at the observatory at University Park of Science & Technology.
  • Take a hike through the biggest tourist drawcard of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
  • Make hay while the sun shines and dip, dive and surf at one of the safer beaches around.
  • Stroll through leafy state parks and Japanese gardens on your way to museum galleries.
